helping millions of
shelter pets find new homes

Helping shelters help homeless pets

According to Shelter Animals Count, shelters are now in their fourth year of having more animals coming in than finding homes. In fact, 108,000 fewer dogs were adopted in 2023 compared to 2019, resulting in an ongoing capacity crisis. To understand the barriers keeping people from adopting or fostering a pet - from the pet owner’s perspective, Hill’s Pet Nutrition presents the findings from the second annual State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report.
The report focuses on a variety of topics from consumer perceptions of shelters to adoption barriers like the cost of pet care, housing restrictions to misperceptions about fostering.

It also offers commentary from animal welfare thought leaders and solutions being deployed by Hill’s shelter partners from across the country.
