Hill's® Prescription Diet®
r/d® Canine Weight Loss-Low Calorie with Chicken

Weight reduction for overweight dogs.

Almost 50% of the pet population is overweight. Even a little extra weight can lead to serious health problems. Extra weight can reduce play time, impact mobility and affect the general health of your dog. Factors contributing to weight gain include age, lack of exercise and overfeeding.

Many commercial pet foods are loaded with salt and fat, which improve the taste but also have dramatic effects on your dog's weight and overall health. Along with frequent physical exercise, choosing the right food plays a very important role in helping dogs reach their proper weight.

At Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians have developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to reduce dogs' body fat by up to 22% in two months, while keeping him or her satisfied.

Feeding Guide

Daily Feeding Guide:

Important Feeding Information

  • These amounts are a starting point only. Determine the amount to feed based on TARGET WEIGHT rather than the current weight. Your dog may need less or more food to safely lose weight. Adjust as needed. If you are unsure or if you are not feeding this product for weight loss, ask your veterinarian.
  • Mix increasing amounts of your dog's new food with decreasing amounts of the old food over a 7-day period.
  • Prescription Diet® formulas are available in a wide variety of dry foods and treats for your dog's unique needs and canned foods with delicious flavors your dog will love. When using with canned food and treats, decrease the amount of dry food to avoid overfeeding. Supplementation with other foods or treats is unnecessary and may decrease the effectiveness of the food.
  • Keep fresh water available at all times!
  • For best results, have your veterinarian monitor your dog's condition.
  • To prevent suffocation, keep this plastic bag out of the reach of pets and children.

Although expensive - so are veterinary bills! This quality dog food does as it states: helps your dog lose weight in a managed, safe way. My dog has gone on this food 3 times in his life, as he has a medical condition that makes it difficult for him to lose weight. Now that he's had ACL surgery - the weight MUST stay down or his other knee will surely go as well. Ignore the pet food analysis website that claims this food is too high in corn, and is sub-standard food. PHOOEY. They should have to prove their claims, or risk being sued in my book. THIS FOOD SAVES DOGS' LIVES. Period. Not all dogs are fat because they have lazy owners (albeit that is the prime cause along with overfeeding) - some have medical conditions. My dog loves the taste of this food, his stools are finally firm (although it does an increase in stool output), and the weight loss comes at a steady, measurable pace. This food has been a success. My dog's average weight loss when using this food is about 12 lbs, and then he plateaus. I do not feed the rec'd ammount on the label, as that was still too much. I DO supplement his food now with another refrigerated food product so as to add some variation to his diet, which has not caused his weight to increase or any other changes. I highly recommend you discuss using this food with your pet. It has proven itself safe and effective (my dog's lab work is normal and healthy). March 6, 2013
This food is enjoyed by both my Labradors! My oldest Labrador has had ACL replacements in both legs. She can't carry any extra weight and it's very important that she eat well. The surgical vet recommended Science Diet Prescription for her several years ago and that's all she eats. I also have another lab whose 4 years old and she gets this, too. They both love it and I feel good that they're getting a healthy diet. February 26, 2013
