How data guides our collective path to more adopted pets

At Hill’s Pet Nutrition, we are committed to enriching the lives of pets and the people who love them, and that commitment extends deeply to the sheltering community. Understanding the evolving landscape of pet adoption, including barriers and opportunities, is critical in helping improve outcomes.

That's why we're proud to present the 2025 Hill’s State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report — our third deep dive into the dynamics impacting pet adoption. Building on proprietary research from a survey of 2,000 Americans and 500 Canadians, this report offers vital year-over-year findings.

This year's insights confirm that economic concerns, particularly the rising cost of veterinary care, significantly influence adoption decisions and, unfortunately, contribute to surrenders. Crucially, the report also identifies clear opportunities to boost foster participation and outlines actionable strategies for collectively placing more pets in loving homes.

We believe data-driven insights are the foundation for progress. We offer this research back to the sheltering community as a tool to guide our shared efforts in a challenging environment.

More than a meal. Daily nutrition for their best life

The right nutrition can transform how a pet feels, looks and acts. That’s why the Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program provides science-led nutrition to hundreds of shelters across North America, helping more than 15 million pets find new homes since 2002.

From hurricanes and wildfires to global pandemics, thousands of pets are impacted each year by a disaster. The Hill’s Disaster Relief Network is a first-of-its-kind program created in 2013 to quickly provide free pet food to animal shelters, veterinary clinics and other non-profit organizations caring for pets after disasters.

We proudly partner with these organizations to support animal welfare around the world
