Help clear the shelters all month long

This year has been unique, which is why we’re doing things a little different this time around. Clear the Shelters 2021 is a month-long event with several ways you can participate. Here’s how you can help.

Adopting a new pet

Ready for an at-home buddy? A WFH co-worker? Many shelters have changed their adoption policy as a way to keep their community safe. The best first step is to call ahead and schedule a visit.

Foster

Not sure if you’re ready for the lifelong commitment? Fostering a dog or cat helps shelters save space while socializing a pet. Look out — you may get attached to your new friend! Luckily, there’s also pet adoption.

Donate

Clear the Shelters has partnered with GreaterGood.org to help you easily donate directly to the shelter of your choice, or to a larger pool of funds for shelters in the future. Either way, you can be sure your money is going where it can make a difference.

Other ways you can donate to a local shelter

Many shelters keep a “wish list” of items, so call and see what they need. Typical items include:

  • Blankets or towels
  • Dog or cat food/treats
  • Gently-used chew toys
  • Leashes or harnesses
  • Pet beds
  • Office supplies
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Garbage bags

Volunteer

Some of the simplest ways to help include making donations and signing up as a shelter volunteer. There are a few different ways you can help.

DOG WALKER

Socialize shelter dogs while helping them get fresh air and exercise every day.

PHOTOGRAPHER

Take photos that truly show a pet’s personality and encourage their adoption.

LAUNDRY

Shelters are always in need of clean bedding, sheets, and towels.

ANIMAL RESCUE

Rescue volunteers work to save pets displaced by crisis or natural disaster.

Every shelter has its own needs, so call ahead and see what they need most.
