Hill's® Prescription Diet®
r/d® Canine Weight Loss-Low Calorie

Weight reduction for overweight dogs.

Almost 50% of the pet population is overweight. Even a little extra weight can lead to serious health problems. Extra weight can reduce play time, impact mobility and affect the general health of your dog. Factors contributing to weight gain include age, lack of exercise and overfeeding.

Many commercial pet foods are loaded with salt and fat, which improve the taste but also have dramatic effects on your dog's weight and overall health. Along with frequent physical exercise, choosing the right food plays a very important role in helping dogs reach their proper weight.

At Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians have developed clinical nutritin especially formulated to reduce dogs' body fat by 22% in two months, while keeping him or her satisfied.

Feeding Guide

Daily Feeding Guide:

Important Feeding Information

  • These amounts are a starting point only. Determine the amount to feed based on TARGET WEIGHT rather than the current weight. Your dog may need less or more food to safely lose weight. Adjust as needed. If you are unsure or if you are not feeding this product for weight loss, ask your veterinarian.
  • Mix increasing amounts of your dog's new food with decreasing amounts of the old food over a 7-day period.
  • Prescription Diet formulas are available in a wide variety of dry foods and treats for your dog's unique needs and canned foods with delicious flavors your dog will love. When using with canned food and treats, decrease the amount of dry food to avoid overfeeding. Supplementation with other foods or treats is unnecessary and may decrease the effectiveness of the food.
  • Keep fresh water available at all times!
  • For best results, have your veterinarian monitor your dog's condition.
  • To prevent suffocation, keep this plastic bag out of the reach of pets and children.

Years of Success I have owned doxies for years and have always been pretty vigilant with weight control... until I adopted Ms. Jasmine. After back surgery at age 2, we had to address it. Since her first diet in which she lost 2.5 pounds reaching a 10.5 pounds goal using R/D, she has had difficulty finding any light/diet food to maintain her weight long term without drastic restriction. (I have tried a number of premium brands over 3 or 4 years.) It's very frustrating to gain even when on a diet program. We have found a happy balance that is somewhat of a YoYo diet. When she gets about 1-1.5 pounds overweight, we go to R/D and she always looses successfully. We then move back to W/D for 6-8 months as the weight creeps on. Then it is back to R/D. This has worked for about 5 years if not longer. She would rather eat W/D, but once we ease her into the R/D she tolerates it after complaining a bit the first week or so. It is pack with fiber, so keep the scoop handy. Without R/D as a successful diet option for this doxie, her weight loss plan would be so restrictive, she would never be satisfied...or satisfied as a doxy can be. Hands down, I would recommend this if nothing seems to work. It is pricey, but worth it for my small dog. She recently was placed on lower calorie Hills food to prevent crystals in her urine, but her crept up faster than normal even feeding less than recommended amount....Now we have 2 pounds to lose, a bit more than we are used to. I am excited to try Hills new Metabolic Solution as a combined weight loss and management solution for our newest weight possibility. It will be nice to not have to switch foods and maintain weight only using amounts. At first bit, she likes it better than R/D, no evil looks or pouting so far. I will give 1 bag a try, if no results we will go back to the proven routine. April 8, 2014
New 10 year Old Dog! I changed my dogs food because she was sluggish and overweight. She lost over 10 lbs with the first 2-3 months and her energy level kicked up like a puppy. After 9 months on the food I thought I could go back to her old food and did for 1 month. She not only gained weight, her energy level dropped and arthritis seemed to set in? She is back to the R/D and all is doing so well. I really believe in this food and so thankful to my vet for recommending. More coupons please!! January 6, 2014
Saved me $4,000 surgery fee I have a (now 11 year old) Peek-A-Poo was weighed 11.4lb back in April of this year. Her back knee caps were dislocating when she ran or even walked. She needed to have surgery on both knees ($2,000 ea.) or lose weight They wanted her down to 8lbs. They recommended Hills RD dry dog food. 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/8 cup in the evening and to cut down on treats. She is now 8.8lbs and losing, treats have been cut back and her knees are fine. Not a single problem now. Boy can she run! October 26, 2014
Good for Dog But a Little Pricey Both our dogs have been using R/D for years. One had a weight problem, and when we got the other one we just started him on it. Obviously they enjoy the taste because they let us know when it's feeding time. The biggest issue is the cost. I highly recommend going to Hill's website to download the coupon before purchasing your supply. Just remember Hill's limits their coupons but now does allow me to print different ones for the dog food and the cat food. A while back they didn't allow that. To my knowledge the website is the only place to get the coupon. It would be nice if they provided some kind of loyalty points for long-term customers. April 21, 2014
Our dog loves it. Our 8 year old Golden Retriever was on RD for about three years and was always at the right weight. We then tried a cheaper brand dog food and he ballooned in weight and was not very active. We then switched him back about 9 months ago and he is back down to the right weight and keeps up with our 2 year old Australian Shepard. We would recommend this for any dog. November 28, 2013
Excellent food My Pug is my baby and I only feed him the best because I want a healthy pet that will be part of our family for many many years. He is 11 years old and he has energy and is in great health. Good food means a longer happier healthier life April 27, 2014
Good but expensive Our big 11 year old had no interest in her previous food and was listless and appeared sickly. Switching to Prescription Diet brought back her vitality and made her eat again. For that we are grateful, unfortunately it comes at an extravagant price. October 22, 2014
Chubby Dog? This WORKS! My 5 y/o Italian Greyhound was carrying extra weight and the Vet recommended I try Metabolic. I was afraid the dog would refuse to eat it but, to my surprise she gobbles it up twice a day and gets excited just hearing the bag open! She's lost half of the excess weight in just months and still going. My dog does not enjoy being outdoors - zooms out to potty then zooms right back inside, even on beautiful days - so we needed help with a restrictive diet since exercise isn't on her agenda. Metabolic is great! Pricey, but great... 1/2 C. twice a day has done her wonders. I will continue to buy this product. March 10, 2014
