Kidney Health

Kidneys are very important because they remove waste substances from the blood, and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible.

Because the right nutrition can positively impact your pet's quality of life, Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians developed Prescription Diet® k/d®, clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your dog's kidney health. In fact, k/d is clinically tested to improve quality of life in dogs

Feeding Guide

Daily Feeding Guide:

Important Feeding Information

  • Cover and refrigerate unused portion.
  • These amounts are a starting point only. Your dog may need less or more food to maintain proper weight. Adjust as needed. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian.
  • With your veterinarian's approval, mix increasing amounts of your dog's new food with decreasing amounts of the old food over a 7-day period.
  • Prescription Diet formulas are available in a wide variety of dry foods and treats for your dog's unique needs, and canned foods with delicious flavors your dog will love. Supplementation with other foods or treats is unnecessary and may decrease the effectiveness of the food. When using with canned food and treats, decrease the amount of dry food to avoid overfeeding.
  • Keep fresh water available at all times!
  • For best results, have your veterinarian monitor your dog's condition.

What a difference! Our 10 year old Scottish Terrier was bloated, no energy, skin and coat was patchy and he even smelled bad...I thought it was because of his age, even though I knew he must have some health issues, so we took him to our vet and he told us his kidneys were not working at 100%, put him on the K/D, and after a few days, he was feeling and looking better. We feed him the dry and canned...and he loves the taste, he can't wait for me to pop the lid off of that can! Had no idea this dog food could change his quality of life so much, but it has. This has helped our dogs kidneys. I'm amazed at this product. I really didnt think it would help our dogs kidneys, but in fact it did. The only problem I have is that I buy the canned and dry and can get pretty expensive. I have used the coupons in the past, but can no longer get them. February 27, 2013
This product could use some improvements I'm not sure if the products (both canned and dry) are helping Duke's (my 13 1/2 year old black lab) kidneys yet-my vet needs to do some more test in a few weeks. My concerns are:packaging, appearance and quality control which for the price in my opinion should not be issues. I think ALL cans (like some you sell) should have pull top tabs to open-having a can opener available all the time is a pain. The canned food does not appear or smell (may not be important to dogs??)very appetizing but all I know is that he does not gobble it down like some other brands he has had. My last concern has to do with the number and size of air pockets in the packaging of the cans. I'm sure you will suggest that the cans are sold by weight but if that were the case then the size and quantity would be more uniform in my opinion plus I have not ever seen that in other cans before. Great food that our dog loves My 2 year old Standard Poodle has been on an exclusive diet of k/d canned food for over 4 months now. He runs to his bowl and scarfs his food down as soon as I put it down. He weighs between 58 and 59 pounds and gets 1 1/2 cans twice per day. He is now healthy and happy and full of juice as a Standard Poodle should be. It took a while to identify his problem but once on the k/d diet he has been like a new dog! Note: He is one of only three surviving siblings out of a litter of nine. The deceased siblings died due to renal failure before their first birthdays. We feel very lucky that our precious Linus survived and we look forward to many wonderful years with him. February 12, 2013
Nutritionally sound, could be more palatable I am a huge fan of Science Diet products, as they are nutritionally sound and my animals thrive on them. My issue with the k/d is palatability. The consistency and taste do not appeal to any of our animals (including the healthy dog and cats who will eat almost anything), so it's not surprising our geriatric who needs it due to renal issues has to be coerced into eating it. Please consider redesigning the formula and/or or processing method to produce a more palatable product. January 9, 2013
