Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. Sustainability information February 2009
At Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc., sustainability is a long term business imperative, critical to the success of the company. It is rooted in our corporate values of Caring, Global Teamwork and Continuous Improvement. Our sustainability focus is on People, Performance and Planet. Sustainability is always meeting or exceeding our financial goals; developing a talented, diverse workforce; optimizing use of natural resources, not polluting and obtaining our raw materials responsibly; and serving the communities where we live and do business.
Recognition
Colgate, Hill's parent company, was recently recognized for sustainability leadership by several noteworthy external organizations: The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, Goldman Sachs and Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship.
- The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index recognized Colgate this fall for our progressive sustainability strategies and our disclosure of climate change information.
- Goldman Sachs identified Colgate as among the companies best positioned to sustain competitive advantage based on a combination of returns on capital, industry positioning and ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) in its 2008 GS SUSTAIN report.
- Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship and Reputation Institute recently ranked Colgate 26th out of 200 U.S. companies recognized by the public for corporate social responsibility.
Sustainability Initiatives Examples at Hill's
Facilities
The two new manufacturing plants being built in Hustopece, Czech Republic and Emporia, Kansas are designed to become LEED certified.
"The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™(*) encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria."
Hill's offices and manufacturing facilities around the globe have, or will, by the end of 2010, utilize energy efficient lighting.
On an annual basis at least 2 percent of Hill's new capital investments are based on energy efficiency. Energy assessments are conducted annually at each manufacturing facility and the research center to support this important initiative.
Global goals supporting sustainability are targeted for 2010 to reduce carbon footprints, reduce energy use, reduce water use and reduce waste water contaminants. The Topeka Plant has delivered a 20 percent reduction in gas usage per unit made from 2004 through 2008.
Cars
Hill's recently took steps to utilize more fuel-efficient automobiles for our Sales representatives. Through this change, we now have cars that average at least seven more miles per gallon in the city and three more on the highway.
Caring Hearts
Through our Hill's Caring Hearts Volunteer Program, which was launched in 2002, employees can earn monetary donations for the not-for-profit agency of their choice, based on the number of hours they serve during the calendar year.
This program links employees to volunteer activities while providing a valuable service to more than 200 agencies and their fund-raising or community service projects.
Some agencies pull strong support from Hill's employees. Currently, 27 employees volunteer for Meals on Wheels and deliver hot meals to people in the community on a regular basis during lunch hours. This program ensures people in Topeka who cannot easily travel have a hot meal delivered to their doorstep.
Summary
In conclusion, the descriptions above are just a couple of examples of the many ways in which Hill's and its employees support the environment and the communities in which they live, along with performing excellently at work. These and other initiatives throughout the world are part of our long-term business imperative of maintaining sustainability.
