Insurance and microchips

Pet insurance

Pet insurance will allow you to care for a sick or injured pet without the additional stress of worrying about vet bills. However, it is important to know that most pet insurance won't cover routine healthcare. It's also important to do your homework, as policies and prices vary widely.

Don't sign anything until you've read the small print and understand exactly what is, and is not, covered. It is also a good idea to discuss your choice of insurer with your vet as he or she will be most familiar with the health risks associated with your particular breed of dog.

Microchips

A microchip is a tiny device that can be implanted under your puppy's skin on his neck. This is a relatively pain-free procedure similar to receiving a vaccination injection.

The injected microchip carries a unique number registered on a central database. If your puppy ever goes missing, he can then be traced back to you. Ask your vet for more details.
